Emily is absolutely correct. Everyone should see how he/she reacts to the weather. When it is cold, step outside and imagine standing for at least 12 hours in the cold with little to eat.
This doesn't have anything to do with what Emily said, but I got to thinking about TSTS and the more I think about it, the more I realize that we are doing really well as far as touching each other and building relationships with each other... But it could be better.
For instance, after we get beat up and thrown in jail, or into the tombs... We do a lot of checking ourselves to make sure we are ok... But some of us (Not all of us, it depends on your character) would be much more concerned with the other girls welfare than their own.
Another thing, I think we should work on HOW we comfort each other and ourselves... Something I thought about: Why is it that none of us have thought to actually DO anything to comfort ourselves or each other besides hugging them? I mean, think about it. Every time we have been told to comfort each other on stage, we have simply put a hand on them or around them. We all do this the EXACT SAME. Wouldn't some of us play with their hair (tuck it behind their ears, etc.) or wash their face or something like that? We need to have different things that we do to comfort one another.
The last thing along these lines that I thought of: When a mother is trying to comfort a child when he/she's upset... What does she do? She holds them, sometimes rocking them, and Sings Them A Lullaby. When we were babies, our mother's sang lullabies to us, usually having one in particular that she would sing over and over because mearly hearing that tune, even without know what the words meant, was comforting. And in most cases, if we were to hear that song again, we would recognize it. Anyways, where I'm going with this: I think we should all research and find a lullaby from our culture (It's not hard, look on Youtube) and memorize the tune. I know that I still remember the Yiddish Lullaby that I found a while ago. But I think that the girls - some more than others - would take comfort in hearing a lullaby even when in jail or the tombs. Not necessarily the words, but humming the tune... (I don't know if this is allowed or not. Against UIL rules?) Because just like when we were babies, even though we may not know the words or what it means, there is this mysterious power about a lullaby that is comforting. I think it would be a great character builder to be able to recall a lullaby from their childhood. This could be used when comforting each other, or even when just trying to comfort themselves. It would also be another form of stage noise besides murmuring.
Wow, that was quite a bit but I wanted to throw that out there.
I agree that we need to find different ways to comfort eachother. It's all the same. And Mrs. Couch is right, we need to act cold or hot according to the time of the year.
University Interscholastic League sponsors a theatre competition among high schools in Texas. This is a chronicle or our triumphs, disheartening rehearsals, and bumps we face along the journey of One Act Play
Teresa Kuehler and I have directed middle school theatre for about 15 years at Shallowater. This year we are doing Mother Hicks by Susan Zeder. It is a challenging piece for middle schoolers. However, Teresa and I have had some of these students since they were in Elementary and Intermediate.
